Sound of Freedom | 2022 | PG-13 | – 5.5.4

content-ratingsWhy is “Sound of Freedom” rated PG-13? The MPAA rating has been assigned for “thematic content involving sex trafficking, violence, language, sexual references, some drug references and smoking throughout.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes many scenes of implied sex acts between adults and children, discussions of sex trafficking, gunfire exchanges, a couple of fight scenes, a couple of raids by officials that arrest criminals, threats of violence, discussion of drug cartels, several arguments, and some strong language. Based on the true story of a Homeland Security agent (Jim Caviezel) that embarked on an unsanctioned mission to find and rescue young children from the clutches of sex traffickers in Honduras, Mexico and Colombia. Also with Mira Sorvino, Bill Camp, José Zúñiga, Kurt Fuller, Eduardo Verástegui and Yessica Borroto Perryman. Directed by Alejandro Monteverde. Several lines of dialogue are spoken in Spanish with English subtitles. [Running Time: 2:15]

Sound of Freedom SEX/NUDITY 5

 – A man carries a young girl to a bed, he unfastens his pants and tells the child, “You know I won’t hurt you,” as another man sneaks behind him, tells the girl to close her eyes and attacks the man (please see the Violence/Gore category for more details). A man holding a bottle of liquor stumbles into a hotel room (presumably inebriated) where a young girl is seated on the bed; the man touches the child’s face and closes the curtains (sex is implied). A man drinks liquor and appears inebriated, he approaches a young boy, grabs him by the hand and they dance; he later walks with the boy holding his hand until another man intervenes. A man watches a video of a man approaching a young girl seated on a bed; we see the man’s face as he begins to cry (sexual assault is implied).
 A man flips through an album filled with photographs of young children and sees a few photos of a young boy seated on a bed and looking very frightened; the next photo shows the boy shirtless with two men seated near him, and then we see the man’s expression change and he becomes enraged. A man prepares a computer document that is introduced as “my spring sampler,” and we see photographs of young children; we understand that the photos are sent for pedophiles to bid on. A van is pulled over at a border crossing and the driver is arrested; we see a young boy in the backseat. A man shows another man a photo of a very young boy and says that he will have him for the entire weekend (implying for sex).
 A husband and his wife kiss tenderly.
 A man describes taking a young woman to a hotel room and having sex with her before realizing that she was 14 years old; he describes realizing that he was the sadness that he saw in her eyes. We hear that sex trafficking is the fastest growing crime network. A man talks to another man about being unable to control his urges and wanting to be able to act on them (pedophilia implied). A man says that he does not act on his fantasies. A medical representative tells a man that a young boy has lacerations consistent with sexual abuse. Men talk about the value of children for the sex trade and a man describes that they can “turn 5-6 tricks a night.” Men discuss opening a high-end sex hotel.
 A woman photographs young boys and girls and instructs them how to pose provocatively; she puts lipstick on a young girl. A woman wears low-cut, tight-fitting dresses that reveal cleavage in several scenes. A woman wears a low-cut top that reveals cleavage, part of her upper abdomen and legs to the upper thighs. Teen boys and teen girls dance on a street (the boys are shirtless and we see their bare chests, abdomens and backs). A shirtless man is shown (we see his bare chest, abdomen and back). A man’s shirt is unbuttoned revealing his partial bare chest and abdomen.

Sound of Freedom VIOLENCE/GORE 5

 – Two men fight: one man slashes at the other using a knife and one man is put in a chokehold and suffocated (we see him dead in a bed later).
 A man takes his young daughter and son to a meeting with a woman that identifies herself as a talent search representative and when he returns to pick them up, there is no sign of them or the woman anywhere; the man rushes through the building pounding on doors in a panic. A young girl is delivered to a man and taken away on a boat with five armed men. Armed agents enter a man’s home, push him off his chair and handcuff him; when the agents search the man’s home, they find many albums with photographs and information about young children.
 A man and a young girl run through a jungle avoiding armed guards, they steal a boat and speed away being chased by armed men in boats; they reach a bank where a car is waiting and speed away while being shot at and a window in the car shatters but no one is harmed. Armed men in a boat shoot at two unarmed men in another boat, they take one of the men away and leave the other in his boat. Armed agents move around an island toward a group of men and a woman, holding them at gunpoint; they handcuff them and put them on boats to take them to the mainland. We see surveillance video of young children being snatched by people on streets and taken away from their caregivers, siblings and parents. A man watches a video of a man approaching a young girl seated on a bed; we see the man’s face as he begins to cry (sexual assault is implied). Several young boys and girls are gathered in a van and driven to a warehouse where they are forced into a shipping container; the children scream and plead to be let out and after they sail across the ocean two men enter the container yelling and offering a third man a choice of any of the children and he chooses a young boy; the boy’s sister protests and yells and a man punches her hard in the face knocking her unconscious. Boats carrying many young children arrive at an island where it is implied that men have paid to use them for sex.
 Two men pose as doctors carrying vaccines for people in a rebel stronghold in a jungle. A man offers a young boy food if he does whatever he tells him to do and says if he doesn’t, “The bad men will kill your sister.”

 A man describes putting a gun to his head and his finger on the trigger. A man tells another man that when he goes to prison, he will be raped every day, and that his genitals will be mutilated. We see a photo of a presumably dead man with a pool of blood on the floor under his head. A government agent tells another agent that he can’t do his job anymore, repeating, “This world is messed up.” A man tells his boss, “This job tears you to pieces.” A man splashes water on his face in a bathroom (it is possible he got sick, but we do not see this) after an upsetting conversation with another man. A man tells another man that he will get 20-30 years in prison, minimum. A man is arrested for “crimes against children.” A medical representative tells a man that a young boy has lacerations consistent with sexual abuse. A young girl cries as a man puts a tattoo on the back of her neck. A man says of another man that seems inebriated, “I think he ate the worm.” Men discuss plans for a rescue mission and two of the men are given syringes containing GPS trackers. We hear about cholera spreading through isolated areas.
 Men discuss a man’s previous job as handling a cartel’s money laundering. We are told that a man buys children and sets them free.

Sound of Freedom SUBSTANCE USE

 – A man says that he deals in cocaine (we do not see the drug), and a man talks about being “jacked up on cocaine.” A man holding a bottle of liquor stumbles into a hotel room (presumably inebriated) where a young girl is seated on the bed (please see the Sex/Nudity category for more details), people drink liquor in a few bar scenes, a man drinks glasses of liquor in several scenes, and a man pours glasses of champagne for people that toast and drink. A man smokes a cigarette in his home, a man lights 2 cigarettes and gives one to another man, a man smokes a cigarette outside a hotel, and a man smokes cigars in several scenes.
