content-ratingsWhy is “65” rated PG-13? The MPAA rating has been assigned for “intense sci-fi action and peril, and brief bloody images.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes the crash of a space vessel and the death of many crew members, many dinosaur attacks with some bloody wounds shown, many scenes of humans defending themselves against dinosaurs, a few scenes of dinosaurs attacking other dinosaurs, discussions of terminal illness in children, discussions of space exploration, and some strong language. Read our parents’ guide below for details on sexual content, violence & strong language.

After a space vessel crashes on a planet, the pilot (Adam Driver) and one other survivor (Ariana Greenblatt) seek to find a way off the planet before it’s too late. Dinosaurs and other Cretaceous period creatures have other ideas. Also with Chloe Coleman, Nika King and the voice of Brian Dare. Directed by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods. [Running Time: 1:33]

 – A man and a pre-teen girl hug in a few scenes.

65 VIOLENCE/GORE 6

 – A man and a pre-teen girl leave a cave shelter and see a giant dinosaur that roars and snaps at them, the man shoots at the dinosaur as he and the girl run into the cave and fall as other dinosaurs try to get to them; the man throws an explosive into a passage to make space for them to pass and it blows up, the man and girl crawl through the very narrow space and rocks crumble down around them and they are separated and the man panics when he thinks the girl might be dead. A man falls into a quicksand pit and sinks under the surface until a pre-teen girl lowers a tree branch in and he pulls himself out. A space vessel and wreckage are struck by a meteor shower and the vessel falls from a ledge with a man and a pre-teen girl inside (we see them with some bloody wounds on the their heads); a giant dinosaur bites the vessel and crushes the metal, pulling pieces off, the man gets out and tries to shoot the dinosaur but the gun doesn’t fire; he hides and another giant dinosaur comes, the man shoots one and the other rams the vessel, the man shoots it and it collapses as it tries to get away, and a third large dinosaur arrives on the scene; the man runs away to make the dinosaur chase him, the dinosaur is distracted by being sprayed by a geyser, it moves toward the man and the girl stabs it in the eye with a poisoned spike, it stumbles over the geyser and is sprayed (we see it fall dead with its flesh burned off).
A dinosaur attacks a man and bites him and they struggle until the man shoots the dinosaur (we see part of the attack in a hologram that is projected from a locator device). A small dinosaur lunges toward a man and tries to bite him, the man struggles with it, throws it to the ground and beats it to death with his gun handle (we see the creature twitch). A man climbs a tree and when he shakes a couple of bugs off his hand, he falls, crashes into limbs on the way to the ground and lands hard dislocating his shoulder; he slams his shoulder against the tree as several menacing dinosaurs approach him and a pre-teen girl, and she steps on his arm to get it back in place (we hear a crunch); the man shoots several of the dinosaurs, the girl is dragged away by a dinosaur, the man shoots in the air to scare it away, the girl runs and finds flying dinosaurs on a beach, she is threatened by two of the other dinosaurs and the man shoots them. Bugs crawl into a pre-teen girl’s mouth as she sleeps and we see foam oozing from her mouth; a man tries to wake her and sees a beetle in her mouth that he coaxes out and the girl revives, gags and spits out goo.
A space vessel flies through a meteor belt and is struck repeatedly, several cryogenic chambers are jettisoned out of the vessel and we see a few of them later smashed on a planet’s surface with the people that had been inside them dead. A giant asteroid hits a planet and we see a huge mushroom cloud as a vessel launches off the surface and away. A man struggles to control a vessel that is careening toward a planet’s surface and it crashes; he revives, he sees that he has a shard of metal stuck in his side and sprays it with something that makes him wince (we see the wound and blood pours when he pulls the metal out).
A pre-teen girl covers a spiky bone with berry juice to use as a weapon and sets a trap for a dinosaur; the dinosaur chases the girl, she traps it in a tunnel and throws explosives inside blowing the creature up. A small dinosaur is stuck in a tar pit and a pre-teen girl and a man help it to get out; the dinosaur is pounced on and killed by several other dinosaurs as it walks away and the girl shrieks in horror.
We hear the ominous sounds of heavy thumping footfalls in the distance in several scenes. A geyser shoots out of the ground spraying a column of steaming water and a man falls to the ground. A large tree falls in front of a man and a pre-teen girl nearly hitting them. A man finds an unconscious pre-teen girl in a cryogenic chamber and disables the containment field to carry her back to his ship. A man finds a pre-teen girl in the woods and chases her. A pre-teen girl climbs a sheer rock wall and throws a rope down for a man to climb up.
A man explores around a crash site and something swims around him in a body of water. A man sees a giant footprint in the mud. Funnel clouds spin over a planet’s surface. A man finds the carcass of a giant creature with flies buzzing around it. A man steps on bones as he walks and finds a giant rib cage and skull on the ground. A pre-teen girl picks berries and throws some at a man, the man tests the berries and says that she should not eat them; he demonstrates that they would make her sick. A giant beetle with pincers lands on a man’s neck and he squishes it; we see a lot of sticky goo and when the man tries to wipe the goo on a tree, his hand gets stuck and he pulls a piece of the bark away when he tugs himself free.
A computer voice reports that a catastrophic collision is imminent. A man reprimands a pre-teen girl a few times for not being careful and not listening to him. A man talks about his pre-teen daughter dying. A woman talks about her pre-teen daughter dying and says, “She just slipped away.” A man leaves his wife and child for a 2-year mission in space. A pre-teen girl finds broken cryogenic chambers around wreckage of a space vessel and cries when she understands that her family is dead. We understand that a pre-teen girl is very ill. A man contemplates killing himself and sends a message that there were no survivors after a crash. A pre-teen girl speaks a language that a man cannot understand and he does not have a translator.
We see a wound on a man’s abdomen and it appears to be getting infected. A pre-teen girl has a burn on her arm and a man treats and bandages it. We see a pre-teen girl with IVs in a couple of scenes. A pre-teen girl is shown in a bed and seems weak as she says that she is so tired.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
