ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Wes Craven's dreams begin to dictate real-life horrors for
the stars of the original "A Nightmare On Elm Street."
SEX/NUDITY 0 - None.
VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - Four people are killed by slashing, with lots of blood.
Blood is shown coming from people's eyes and noses. Heads are slashed off. The heroine
falls into an open coffin and bangs her head during an earthquake (blood is shown on her
brow). There are some gross-out scenes with flying green vomit, goo pours from a
telephone, and some pretty nasty monster effects. There is a shocking moment when a boy
tapes knives to his fingers and tries to kill his mother. A baby-sitter gets clawed in the
back and is dragged to the ceiling until dead. A little boy is victimized by nightmares,
after his father is killed.
PROFANITY 5 - Three F-words and an assortment of insults. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Loss of a parent, God, monsters, murder, insanity.
MESSAGE - Demons exist, but can be controlled for a time. What you dream
might actually occur. There is no such thing as a final sequel of a Hollywood movie.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
