Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Kevin Costner stars in this story of a future Earth covered
with water.
SEX/NUDITY 4 - One nude scene in which we see the bare buttocks of a woman.
Some sex talk: one character offers another sex in exchange for her life, lots of
references to men being out to sea a long time and "needing" a woman. Threats of
rape and a rape attempt (see Violence/Gore below). One implied sex scene in which a couple kiss and
fondle each other (clothed).
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - Ships with and without people on them are blown up and set
on fire. Several violent chase scenes in which a gang on motor boats shoot, stab, harpoon
and bomb a group of people. Three individual killings -- two people are shot point blank
and one is stabbed; there isn't much blood. One character has his eye shot out and walks
around with the eye socket exposed and bleeding. Another character is wounded by a bullet
and bleeds. One character is almost drowned in mud. Slavery and kidnapping are depicted.
Most disturbing is the kidnapping of a child: The child is threatened with rape, death and
mutilation. A woman is hit on the head with an oar and later almost raped (her assailant
is stabbed to death, some blood is shown). Lots of gunfire, fights with harpoons and
hooks.

PROFANITY 2 - Several scatological references and a few milder profanities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Greed, slavery, kidnapping, rape, mutilation, intolerance.
The bad guys (a roving gang) are known as "smokers" because they smoke
cigarettes all the time.
MESSAGE - People need each other to survive and they need to believe in
something.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
