Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Jeremy Irons stars as an History teacher, who responds to a
question about the meaning of History by launching a meandering airing of his family's
secrets, which include a number of closeted skeletons. There's sex and murder.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - Bare male bottoms, and teenage girls in modest underwear. A
young man is shown in is long-johns and it is obvious that he is aroused. Bare breasts.
Two teens are shown making love several times, in various locales: a train, an abandoned
hay storage outbuilding.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A man is found dead, floating in a river. When he is
turned over he is bluish white and bloated. Some pushing and shoving between two young
men. A young woman is shown in the early stages of an abortion (the old-fashioned way),
and is heard screaming out in fear and pain.

PROFANITY 5 - The F-word is used several times. Scatological terms are also
used several times. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Drinking, "intoxication shows them for what they are:
mindless fools." Murder, jealousy, incest, premarital (teen) sex, teenage pregnancy,
abortion, kidnapping.
MESSAGE - The very insignificance of a single event, however dreadful it may
seem at the time, is where hope dwells.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
