The familiar Lewis Carroll tale is reinterpreted by being framed as the story of a grown-up Alice (Mia Wasikowska), who is manipulated into a marriage to a young man she does not love. When she runs away after he proposes during a party, she falls through a deep hole that brings her to the world of the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), the Cheshire Cat and other magical characters. An ambitious government employee (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) working in Paris dreams of becoming a Secret Service agent and thinks he has finally gotten a promotion when he is assigned to accompany his new partner (John Travolta) and help with his mission. While the mission is unclear at the start, they slowly uncover a terrorist plot that may get them both killed. Also with Kasia Smutniak, Richard Durden and Eric Godon. Directed by Pierre Morel. Shutter Island [2010] [R] - 7.9.6
Thriller set in 1954 about two U.S. Marshals (Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo) sent to Shutter Island, a remote island hospital for the criminally insane in Massachusetts, to investigate the disappearance of a patient. They quickly run into trouble when they find themselves being deceived by the hospital staff and administrators; the situation becomes even more perilous when a hurricane strikes the island, and the two officers become stranded and unable to communicate with anyone from the mainland. It's 1910 and celebrated Russian author Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer) is dying. He has been arguing with both his wife (Helen Mirren), and his secretary and protégé (Paul Giamatti), his 13 children want his time, money and approval, and he's conflicted about a Christian anarchist movement that was started in his name. When he leaves his estate, he ends up at a railroad station in Southern Russia, where a crowd of reporters has gathered to file reports on his condition.
