Johnny Depp stars as the eponymous 19th century London barber, who returns to Fleet Street from jail, after being falsely accused and convicted by a lecherous judge (Alan Rickman). Obsessed with avenging himself, he sets up shop and uses his razors to dispatch his patrons, whose bodies his neighbor (Helena Bonham Carter) uses as the main ingredient for her meat pies. Live-action/CGI production about the three famous singing chipmunks, based on the original 1961 TV cartoon: The three chipmunk brothers with the squeaky voices, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, become international pop sensations after being adopted by struggling songwriter (Jason Lee). Daniel Day-Lewis stars as a silver prospector in the late 1800s who strikes oil and becomes wealthy by buying up petroleum-rich but un-farmable land in Texas from poor farmers. However, he soon discovers that wealth and power do not guarantee a happy life. Also with Ciaran Hinds, Dillon Freasier, Kevin J. O'Connor, Russell Harvard and Paul Dano. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story [2007] [R] - 8.6.7
Rock 'n Roll satire, about fictional songwriter and singer Dewey Cox (John C. Reilly), who outdid Elvis and every other real music star in drugs, sex, and hard living: he slept with hundreds of women, married three, had 22 children and 14 stepchildren, and became addicted to every known drug. The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep [2007] [PG] - 1.4.2
A young Scottish boy (Alex Etel) waiting for his father to return from war finds a mysterious egg on the beach. When the egg hatches a water creature that grows rapidly the boy decides that the only safe place for it is in the nearby loch. Unfortunately, it is difficult for the boy to protect the creature from men whose first reaction to fear is violence. Also with Emily Watson, Ben Chaplin, David Morrissey and Geraldine Brophy. Lions for Lambs [2007] [R] - 1.5.6
Two young men whose convictions drive them to enlist in the Army are sent to the Afghan mountains as part of the first wave of a new initiative that a young senator (Tom Cruise) believes will turn the tide on the war against the Taliban. Their decision has a strong emotional impact on the professor (Robert Redford) who inspired their decision to join the military, as well as the senior reporter (Meryl Streep) who was enlisted to sell the plan to the public. Resurrecting the Champ [2007] [PG-13] - 4.7.5
Josh Hartnett stars as a struggling sports reporter who rescues a former boxing champion (Samuel L. Jackson) who's living on the streets, and soon discovers that the homeless man is, in fact, a boxing legend that was believed to have died. The opportunity to resurrect the champ's story turns into a personal journey as the reporter examines his own life and his relationship with his family, and particularly his six-year-old son. A 16-year-old girl (Ellen Page), disillusioned by the breakdown of relationships she sees around her decides to experiment by having sex with her best friend (Michael Cera). When she becomes pregnant she decides to carry the baby to term and have it adopted by an affluent couple (Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman). The Alien and Predator monsters from the two film franchises meet on Earth once more and duke it out over planetary domination. Shy and withdrawn, Lars Lindstrom (Ryan Gosling) has a boring office job, a dark apartment in a garage behind his childhood home, and generally a lonely, bleak existence. With the help of a rogue CIA agent, Wilson managed to persuade the CIA to train and arm the fighters, who eventually morphed into the Al Qaeda. Based on George Crile's book. A brother and sister (Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney) who are already struggling with their own complicated lives are forced to deal with the care of their aging father (Philip Bosco), who suffers from dementia. A woman (Belén Rueda) who grew up in an orphanage returns to transform it into a home for mentally challenged children. But shortly after arriving there are strange occurrences involving her young son (Roger Príncep) and his imaginary friends that lead her to believe there is something supernatural affecting the house.
