Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Denzel Washington tries to kill a criminal who's a computer
program (Russell Crowe) and now in the real-world.
SEX/NUDITY 4 - A brief view of a woman's breasts. A man is "born"
naked and we see his buttocks in an extended scene. We see a man's bare chest a couple of
times and a computer program of a bikini-clad woman caressing herself; a man (in the same
program) also caresses her. A man in a club is seen in bikini briefs after being forced to
take off his suit.
VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - There are numerous scenes of people being killed and/or
maimed in numerous ways: Men are shot (one man is shot many times in the chest and torso
causing blood to splatter), two men are shown being electrocuted (they convulse and
scream), a man's neck is broken, a man is strangled, a man is thrown to his death, a woman
is bitten in the neck, a man is bludgeoned to death and a man's hand is blown off. There
are also fist fights and prison guards beat a man with clubs. Flashbacks of a scene where
a man's family is blown up and he is left without an arm. We see a thick needle go in
behind a man's ear; a thick stream of blood comes out. A man cuts his finger off
(close-up) and we see weird goop come out of the stump. A crime scene has blood smeared on
a wall and we see brief glimpses of bloody hands and torsos. A man is nearly poked in the
face with glass.

PROFANITY 6 - About 10 F-words, some scatological terms, and a handful of
milder obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Computers & technology, virtual reality, serial killers
and sociopaths, revenge.
MESSAGE - We may not be able to control the technology we create.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
