Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Marcello Mastroianni romances Shirley MacLaine at her
husbands funeral, after having carried a torch for her for a long time.
SEX/NUDITY 3 - A little kissing and some sexual references. A man is shown
in his underwear and a woman in panties and bra, she handcuffs him to the bed and
threatens with hot wax from a candle.
VIOLENCE/GORE 1 - A couple of arguments, nothing physical. A boy walks on
train tracks contemplating suicide but nothing happens,

PROFANITY 5 - There is a smattering of four letter words, including the
F-word. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Extra marital sex alluded to, death, insanity, suicide (the
grandson, missing his grandfather and unable to reach his mother tries to hurt himself by
walking on railroad tracks in order to get attention). This might be disturbing to some
children.
MESSAGE - You are never too old to start over. We all make mistakes and they
can't be undone, but things can get better. There are no hopeless causes.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
