Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Bitter-sweet story about a pretty girl (Marisa Tomei) who
falls in love with a rather simple-minded man (Christian Slater) who suffers from a
heart-ailment, to boot.
SEX/NUDITY 4 - Tomei is shown in her underwear. Later, Slater caresses her
clothed chest and they end up taking each other's clothes off; but we only see her nude
shoulders and back and nothing really happens. There is one scene when we do see them
lying -- covered -- in bed together. Another man violently rips Tomei's blouse, and we see
her bra. There's some tender kissing.
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - There is one disturbing scene of an attempted rape.
There's chasing, shoving, and hitting, as Tomei is attacked and thrown to the ground. Her
clothes are ripped open and one man pounds her head on the ground until she passes out.
There are two brief fights, with punching, kicking and clubbing. We see a man with a knife
in his stomach, which he proceeds to pull out. Some blood is visible.
the review continues below...
PROFANITY 5 - Some harsh to profane name calling. The F-word is uttered
once. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Being an orphan, broken relationships, death. Most of the
characters smoke; a lot, and frequently.
MESSAGE - Finish what you start. Don't judge people by pre-conceived ideas.
Being naive is not the same as being stupid.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
