Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Sean Penn is down on his luck when he gets lost in a weird
Arizona town.
SEX/NUDITY 7 - A couple have sex (seen from above) with thrusting; we see
his bare buttocks. A couple have sex a couple of times with the woman kneeling in front of
the man but no actual nudity can be seen. A few flashbacks where sex is implied with men
on top of a woman (no nudity). Sexual innuendo (including implied sexual abuse). Kissing.
VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - A man is killed in an extended scene where he is whacked
with a golf club and hit in the back and chest with an ax (his chest is split open and is
bloody with the ax sticking out). A man has two fingers cut off with lots of blood (we see
bleeding stumps later). A man is shot in the chest which gushes blood and a gaping wound
is shown. A few men are shot with blood shown on their heads and torsos (sometimes very
bloody). A bloody, twisted body on a canyon floor is seen a couple of times. A man is
smacked in the head. A man is punched in the face leaving blood on his cheek. Many scenes
of a man being beaten up (punches, kicks) and sometimes he's covered in blood. A man is
pushed off a ledge which breaks his teeth and twists his leg. A woman is choked. Bodies
are shown lying in pools of blood. Threatening with tools and guns.

PROFANITY 8 - 35+ F-words, some anatomical references, many scatological
references and mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
