ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Three college roommates (Lara Flynn Boyle, Josh Charles,
Stephen Baldwin) discover love, lust and the dangers of homosexual and heterosexual
attraction.
SEX/NUDITY 9 - There are many scenes which contain nudity, primarily bare
bottoms (both male and female) and bare breasts. Some of the nudity occurs during numerous
sex scenes: A man is shown kissing a woman's bare breast and another woman's clothed
breast; a woman is shown nude through a shower curtain. There is an extended sex scene
with two men and a woman, and an attempted seduction scene between two men. Oral sex is
suggested, though it occurs under sheets -- complete with moans. Also, there are many
conversations about sex with hand and hip gestures, and many graphic conversations about
homosexual sex. A woman simulates an orgasm on a library table.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A man's arm is shown bleeding after being cut by glass. A
man falls in the bathroom and appears to be in pain. There are also some yelling scenes.
PROFANITY 7 - The F-word is used approximately 25 times, and there are
numerous scatological and sexual references and milder profanities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Living with roommates, college, homosexuality, discovering
your sexual identity, menage a trois.
MESSAGE - It is not easy to mix sex with friendship; unacceptable sexual
behavior makes you feel like an outcast.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
