The Sweetest Thing

Although our site is very popular, the current economic climate has reduced our revenues just when we need extra security to prevent attacks from hackers who don't like what we do. If you think what we do is worthwhile, please donate or become a member.

Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.

MPAA Rating: R

Two women (Cameron Diaz and Christina Applegate) play the relationship game by avoiding emotional attachment and leave a slew of damaged and despondent males in their wake. While trying to help a friend (Selma Blair), who has just been dumped by her boyfriend, they discover that they are tired of the game and it's time to confront their fears. Also with Thomas Jane and Jason Bateman. [1:24]

SEX/NUDITY 7 - A man and a woman kiss passionately and we see them having sex in a store fitting room (she hangs from a rod with her legs wrapped around his waist and they thrust for an extended period of time, and we see this scene again in the end credit reel). A woman is shown in bed having an orgasm (she moans and writhes) and her partner's head appears at her waist from under the sheets (we see part of this scene again in the end credit reel); as he moves up to lie next to her we see his bare chest. A man and woman kiss passionately and we see their probing tongues. A man's genitals become stuck in a woman's mouth while presumably she was performing fellatio (he apparently has a piercing there, and we see him bare-chested lying back on a bed and we see her face from the nose up); there is a large crowd of people watching them while waiting for medical assistance. A woman, who is adjusting her breasts, invites other women to touch them (they are fake) and we see several women doing so. A woman flirts with a man and we see them dancing and kissing passionately. An old man asks a young woman for oral sex. For the benefit of a passing motorcyclist, a woman who's driving pretends that another woman (who is bent over her lap) is performing oral sex on her. We see a nude man from the waist up, two women react to his endowment when they glance down, and we see his bare buttocks as he walks away (a woman rubs her panty covered crotch in discomfort after apparently having had sex with him). Two women take off their wet clothes down to their bras and panties. Two women get out of their car in their underwear and wrap themselves with maps. Men and women dance in club scenes several times; they thrust and wiggle their hips and dance closely. A woman pinches a man's buttock. Two women have a conversation in a noisy street and their hand gestures look obscene. A man smacks a woman's buttocks a few times (they are pretending it's sexual) during the end credit reel. Women wear figure and body revealing outfits throughout the movie: we see bare midriffs, bare backs to the hips, cleavage, bare shoulders and bare thighs. A man talks about being impotent. Two women tease another woman about a stain that is on her dress (it's apparently semen), and the joke continues to play out when she takes the dress to the dry-cleaner and he smells it and licks it trying to figure out what the stain is. A woman puts her eye up to a hole in the wall of a men's room stall and gets poked by what we are told was a penis (we do not see the penis). A woman urinates in a urinal in a men's room (we just see her with her dress hiked up and trying to position herself). A woman removes two bra pads from her top. A man and woman kiss romantically several times and two men kiss briefly on the mouth a couple of times.

VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A man on a motorcycle crashes and skids across a highway after being distracted by two women in a car. A man tackles another man to the ground a couple of times. An exercise bike breaks loose and the rider is flung into a mirror and falls to the floor (we see this again in the closing credit reel). Two men drive golf balls into the ball retrieval cart while a man is inside. A man's nose begins to drip a trickle of blood. A man slaps another man in the face twice -- after he asks him to. A man threatens a man a couple of times. Two women run toward and push another woman back onto a water- and fish-filled mattress (in the most affectionate possible way). A woman opens some foil-wrapped food that is covered with maggots and when she throws it out the car window it ends up splattering back on her car's windshield. A woman tries to flush a urinal, the pipe breaks and she and another woman are sprayed and pushed back across the room and onto the floor. A man tumbles down some stairs and over a railing (we don't see him injured), and a woman tumbles out of a window and into shrubbery. A man and woman step into a street and are splashed by a car driving through a puddle. A truck crashes into a mannequin and its limbs scatter around. A man trips on stairs a couple of times.

PROFANITY 6 - 11 F-words, 11 sexual references, 26 scatological terms, 39 anatomical terms, 18 mild obscenities, 2 religious profanities, 45 religious exclamations. [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Relationships, promiscuity, love, marriage, fear of commitment, homosexuality, boundaries, disappointment, loneliness.

MESSAGE - We have to let go of our fears and take a chance to find fulfillment in love.

(Note: People are shown drinking alcohol to the point of inebriation.)

Our Ratings Explained

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.

INAPPROPRIATE ADS? We have little control over ads since we belong to ad agencies that serve ads automatically; a standing order should prevent provocative ads, but inappropriate ads do sneak in.
