ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

The plot plays lip service to the eponymous video game,
with Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi, the Brooklyn plumbers who have to
fight their way toward Dennis Hopper -- he's the bad boss of an alternate universe, where
dinosaurs evolved into humanoids.
SEX/NUDITY 2 - Lots of cleavage and one kiss. A baby is hatched out of a
giant egg and there are some sexual references.
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - There are some scary looking dinosaurs, and a couple of
people do die: one is instantaneously turned into a skeleton and fossilized on a cave
wall, and the other turns into green slime. The weapons used are primarily flame-throwers,
and while one creature (a humanoid with a lizard head) catches fire, he's not harmed. A
small dinosaur -- supposed to be the equivalent of a dog -- gnaws on a woman's foot, and
she promptly stabs him; both seem uninjured. A man is changed into a chimpanzee. Gore is
mainly of the disgusting and slimy variety. There are various threats of violence.
PROFANITY 2 - Some name calling, usually with the suffix "breath"
attached. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Evolution and alternate universes.
MESSAGE - The movie is a blatant advertisement for a brand of sneakers. The
supernatural exists.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
