Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.
Based on a graphic novel, Spawn is recruited to fight for
evil -- but good forces try to turn him to their side.
SEX/NUDITY 2 - Sexual innuendo (including a masturbation reference). A
scantily clad woman.
VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - Scary views of Hell with fires and monsters. A man is
doused and set on fire, a man is impaled on a fence, a woman is stabbed and a man's throat
is slit. A monster's head is cut off (lots of green blood). A woman is shot in the head
with a bit of blood. Many people are shot and killed, usually with automatic gunfire (but
usually without blood). Photos of disfigured people and a charred corpse are briefly seen.
Spawn is monstrous looking and sometimes looks like the burn victim he is (bloody and
charred). Sometimes people and monsters bleed green blood. A man is blown out of a window.
Many fights with punches, throwing people around and kicking. Explosions, threatening with
guns.

PROFANITY 4 - One F-word derivative, some scatological references, some
anatomical references, many mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
