The Son's Room

Although our site is very popular, the current economic climate has reduced our revenues just when we need extra security to prevent attacks from hackers who don't like what we do. If you think what we do is worthwhile, please donate or become a member.

Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.

MPAA Rating: R

A family lives what seems to be a perfect life in Northern Italy: the father is a psychotherapist, his wife and two teenage children love him, and all is well with their world -- until a tragic event changes all of them forever. In Italian with English subtitles. With Laura Morante, Nanni Moretti, Guiseppe Sanfelice, Claudi Della Seta and Stefano Accorsi. [1:27]

SEX/NUDITY 5 - In a brief scene a husband and wife lie in bed together; the man begins to kiss the woman, she pulls down one strap of her nightgown exposing her bare breast and nipple, and the man kisses her breast, they kiss some more and both moan. During a session with his therapist a man confesses his fear that he will "rape a child," and a man talks about his obsession with sex with anyone other than his wife: he talks about going to porn movies, masturbating, performing oral sex on another man, and having sex with a prostitute. A young man tries to kiss a young woman but she refuses.

VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - During a session with his therapist a man confesses his fear that he will "rape a child." Young women fight on a basketball court; they shove and hit each other and one player goes after members of the audience. A man yells violently and throws things around an office during a fit of rage. A man talks about having tried to commit suicide and that he'll try it again. A woman screams and cries in grief. We see a body lying in a coffin and watch as it is closed up and sealed. Several young people ride mopeds; they kick at each other and pull on each other's sleeves, which causes them to swerve. A man breaks a teapot by pulling the handle off in a rage. We hear about someone having gotten trapped in an underwater cave and someone having bloody and torn fingers and hands. A man and woman argue.

PROFANITY 5 - 6 F-words, 4 sexual references, 2 anatomical terms, 3 scatological terms, 3 mild obscenities, 1 religious profanity, 1 religious exclamation. [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Guilt, turning back time, theft, death of a child, grief, psychotherapy, obsessive-compulsive behavior, letting go, being competitive, consequences, honesty, cancer, schizophrenia, objectivity, hitchhiking.

MESSAGE - We can never completely control our lives.

(Note: A young man and woman talk about smoking marihuana. People are shown drinking alcohol in a couple of scenes.)

Our Ratings Explained

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.

INAPPROPRIATE ADS? We have little control over ads since we belong to ad agencies that serve ads automatically; a standing order should prevent provocative ads, but inappropriate ads do sneak in.
