Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Brad Pitt plays a bare-fisted boxer in this heist/dark
comedy about several men in the business of stealing diamonds, fixing fights,
back-stabbing and murdering for personal gain. Also with Benicio Del Toro, Dennis Farina,
Vinnie Jones, Rade Serbedzija, Jason Statham, Alan Ford, Mike Reid, Robbie Gee, Lennie
James, Ewen Bremner and Jason Flemyng. [1:44]
SEX/NUDITY 6 - Several instances of sexual innuendo, including references to
sadism, anal and oral sex, and sex with another's mother. Also, there's a sexual reference
about the Virgin Mary and an extended sexual analogy with graphic anatomical terms. We see
the bare breasts of a few topless women in a nightclub, as well as several photos of
bare-breasted women on playing cards. Two women kiss a man on the cheek. We see a man in
his underwear with his shirt on, several shirtless men, and a man in a tailor's store
without pants (his shirt and jacket cover his underwear).
VIOLENCE/GORE 10 - Lots and lots of threatening with guns, with many shots
fired and several people killed throughout the movie. A man commits suicide by putting gun
to his head and pulling the trigger; we hear a loud shot and then see lots of blood
splatter on the wall. We see a man grab a knife, go to a corpse, saw away a bit and then
pull up the part of the corpse's arm he just sawed off (blood on the arm). We see men with
knives and body bags ready to cut up a living man they've captured. We hear a man is shot
in the face and killed; then we see the lower half of the corpse. Several men are shot
several times in the chest; we see some blood on the chest of a few of them. We see lots
of blood dripping down a man's face after being shot. Specific instruction on how to cut
up a body into six pieces and feed it to pigs. Several times men are pistol whipped in the
head with a gun. Several instances of men having guns pointed at their heads. A man puts a
knife to a man's neck and threatens to cut his head off. A man knocks glass into a man's
eye. Men hold a man down on a pool table and whack him with a hammer. A man is zapped with
a stun gun. A man is suffocated by having a plastic pulled over his head. Several violent,
bare-fisted fight scenes, with numerous punches and headbutts and lots of blood. A man
grabs another man's genitals. A man punches another several times in the face and throws
him into two fences. Several times a man punches other men and knocks them out, often
causing much blood. A man is choked. A man's head slams into a boxing mat very hard. A man
slaps a boy in the back of the head. Men take bats and bust up several gambling machines.
A man hits two men over the head with a bat, knocking them out. We see many men with many
cuts and scrapes and blood on their faces several times throughout the movie. A trailer
home with a woman sleeping in it is torched (arson), killing a man's mother as the son
looks on; we later see the remains of the charred trailer. A man slams a man into a car
and then slams the door on his head several times; we see lots of blood dripping down the
man's face. A man grabs another by his neck tie and pulls him into a car; then rolls up
the window, locking the man's head in it, and begins to drive away with the man's head
still stuck in the window. The man chokes a bit and then is set free and tumbles away. Two
men are run over by cars (very loud and surprising both times). A car wrecks into a
building, and a sword goes into a passenger's gut, killing him. A car backs into a van. A
man puts another man in a car trunk. A corpse is put into a car trunk. A man opens a door
and hits another man in the face who's walking by. We see a dead dog killed from a dog
fight. A man hits a dog with a can. Two dogs attack a rabbit. A man almost cuts open a dog
with a knife but never goes through with it. A dog chews on a man's leg, causing blood and
bite wounds. Talk of cutting off a man's foreskin. A man vomits.

PROFANITY 10 - About 145 F-words, lots of anatomical and scatological
references, lots of mild obscenities, several religious profanities, lots of insults, and
several ethnic slurs. [profanity glossary]
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
