ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|

In this comedy Woody Allen plays an unlucky thief whose
wife (Tracey Ullman) accidentally strikes it rich with a cookie business fronting his
latest failed scheme; she embraces their new wealthy lifestyle while he detests it. Also
with Hugh Grant, Tony Darrow, Michael Rapaport, Elaine Stritch, George Grizzard, Jon
Lovitz, Brian Markinson, Evelyn Iocolano and Elaine May. [1:35]
SEX/NUDITY 1 - A kiss. A man says that men salivate while looking at "a
piece of tail" in a centerfold magazine. A man and woman briefly discuss (in
non-graphic terms) her former days as a topless dancer. In the background of a scene at a
museum, we see a classical painting of a nude female reclining. Several women wear
cleavage-revealing tops.
VIOLENCE/GORE 1 - Played for laughs: a police officer threatens several men
with a gun and a man threatens to hit his wife in a couple of scenes.
PROFANITY 3 - A few anatomical references and many mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Theft, owning a business, getting "cultured", high
society, bickering spouses, separation, swindling money, deception.
MESSAGE - Wealth can be more of a burden than a pleasure. Culture and money
aren't satisfactory substitutes for love and happiness.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
