ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Toy soldiers are accidentally implanted with top-secret
artificial intelligence chips and they decide to destroy a rival toy action-figure line.
SEX/NUDITY 1 - Male dolls make verbal advances toward female dolls.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - Dolls attack humans and other dolls in hordes. Humans are
hit by darts and nails shot by the dolls, a man is stabbed in the leg with a toy knife and
a doll sets a man's pants on fire by shooting a torch. Some toys are destroyed by slamming
them onto a wall. Lots of property damage is caused by the dolls shooting various weapons
(trees and telephone poles are knocked down and catch fire). A toy car full of dolls
explodes destroying them, a doll is electrocuted and dolls are destroyed by a lawn mower.
A doll is shown in pieces after an attack. A man punches another man in the face. A boy
hangs from a power pole. Some of the dolls look freakish, mean and scary.
PROFANITY 3 - About 5 anatomical references, 4 scatological terms, about 10
mild obscenities and several insults. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Responsibility, computers, artificial intelligence, the
military.
MESSAGE - Technological advances can produce monstrous results.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
