ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

High school student Charles Brady and his mother are
outsiders, new to a small town. They're also "sleepwalkers," shape-shifting
monsters who feed on virtue.
SEX/NUDITY 6 - Incestuous sex is both implied and displayed. The one sex
scene is between mother and son and shows partial nudity, but since the bodies are
enhanced by monster makeup nothing "human" is shown. Also, attempted child
molestation by a teacher.
VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - Plenty of violence. Some of it is very silly, such as a
scene in which a sheriff's deputy is killed with a corn cob, but there is plenty of gore,
blood and amputation.
PROFANITY 3 - Very little, a few four-letter words uttered in fear. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Incest, equation of virginity with purity.
MESSAGE - There are monsters living even in the most ordinary environments.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
