A young woman (Claire Danes) working in Los Angeles becomes romantically involved with an older man (Steve Martin), believing he is in love with her, although he seems to have problems with intimacy. At the same time, the young woman meets a young man (Jason Schwartzman) who is quirky, unsettled, and still trying to find himself. Based on Steve Martin's eponymous novella. SEX/NUDITY 6 - A young man and a young woman have sex: we see his bare back and chest and we see her bare shoulders (she is wearing a bra), he moves rhythmically, and they kiss (please see the Violence/Gore category for more details).
 An older man and a young woman kiss, he leaves the room and when he returns the young woman has removed her dress and lies nude on a bed (she lies on her stomach and we see her bare back, buttocks and legs); the man sits next to her and caresses her.
 A woman flirts with a young man, they go to her apartment, she comes out of the bathroom wearing stockings and a corset (we see part of her bare buttocks and cleavage), she pushes the young man back onto a bed (he is clothed), she climbs on top of him, straddles him and moves rhythmically while moaning and calling out his name.
 A young woman looks through binoculars and sees a young man with his hand in his pants moving rhythmically as he masturbates (we see his pants open and his hand in his underwear).
 A young woman tries on a dress, and an older man who's lying on a bed admires her; the man caresses her leg under the dress, and the camera moves to her face and it is implied that he might be performing oral sex on her or otherwise stimulating her.
 A young woman bathes in a tub of bubbles in several scenes and we see her bare shoulders and her bare legs as she shaves them. A woman wears very low-cut tops and dresses that reveal deep cleavage, throughout the movie. A man looks at a poster of a woman wearing a string bikini (we see cleavage and a bare buttock). Women wear low-cut evening gowns that reveal cleavage and bare shoulders and bare backs. A young woman showers and we see he silhouette through steam covered glass. An older man and a young woman lie in bed together, and we see his bare chest and her bare back. A woman sleeps in a man's bed with a sheet covering her to the shoulders (it is implied that they have had sex).
 A young man and a young woman kiss, she lies back on a bed, she asks him if he has protection, and they stop because he does not. An older man lies in bed and a young woman climbs on top of him and kisses him tenderly. A young man and a young woman kiss, and a man and a woman kiss.
 A woman sprays perfume on her neck and tells a man to smell, and he leans in (she is a department store cosmetic associate).
 A young man and a young man (both clothed) sleep in bed holding each other. A man walks with a woman and has his hand in the back of her pants. A man and a young woman hug, and a young man and a young woman hug.
 A woman gives a young woman advice about relationships and sex including the performance of oral sex and its frequency. A young man talks to a woman about, "all those Oriental positions" they tried the night before. A young man asks a young woman if he can kiss her, and she says no. In separate scenes an older man and a young woman talk about how they each think their relationship is.

VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - While a young man and a young woman are having sex, a cat attacks a part of the young man's anatomy and he yells.
 A man confesses to a young woman that he has slept with another woman and she cries. A young woman lies in bed, appears ill and we learn that she has stopped taking her anti-depressants.
 Several men urinate along the side of a road (we hear loud trickling).

LANGUAGE 2 - 1 scatological term, 3 anatomical terms, 3 religious exclamations.

SUBSTANCE USE - A man offers a young man some marijuana and he refuses. People drink alcohol at an art gallery gathering, a man drinks wine in several scenes and a man and a young woman drink wine at dinner. Three young women smoke cigarettes and drink beer at a concert, and people are shown smoking cigarettes.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Value of life, relationships, intimacy, honesty, dating, divorce, misunderstanding the potential of a relationship, infidelity, depression, anti-depressants, sexual relationships with no commitment, loneliness.

MESSAGE - Reciprocal love is worth waiting for. People have different capacities for love.
