SEX/NUDITY 3 - A kiss. We see feet sticking out of a rocking car; later, a
woman gets out of the car and adjusts her skirt. A boy finds a used condom and waves it in
another boy's face. A boy peeks through a hole at a girl in her nightgown. In two scenes,
we see boys' bare backsides as they're skinnydipping; we also see a woman in her bra and
underwear and a girl in a slip while they're swimming. We see a young girl's chest and
stomach through her wet top.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - We see a dead woman in a casket; we also see a dead man
lying in a bed and later, on the ground. Shirtless, barefoot men with shackles around
their ankles are forced to walk a long distance (we hear the sound of a whip cracking but
don't see anyone being hit). sounds as if . A man has a bowel movement in his pants
(people act as if it's very smelly).
PROFANITY 5 - Many anatomical and scatological references, lots of mild
obscenities, many insults and many racial slurs and slang terms. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Slavery, race relations, the Depression, death, friendship,
loyalty, keeping promises.
MESSAGE - Rules that encourage discrimination are meant to be broken.
