Lou Diamond Phillips stars as a young Inuit Eskimo who is coming of age and coming to terms with the encroachment of the white man.

SEX/NUDITY 4 - Four sex scenes without nudity, but with lots of groaning and moving under covers. We also see the birth of a baby, but it is mostly under wraps.

VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A fist fight between father and son and two murders -- one by knife during a fight and one by a gunshot in the back; some blood in both. There are several disturbing scenes including a bloody fight with a polar bear and a bloody wolf attack in which a character's face is bitten. Also, a whale hunt with spears.

PROFANITY 0 - None. [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Murder, prejudice, alcoholism, suicide.

MESSAGE - Putting the good of the community ahead of the good of the individual and learning to let go of anger.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. INAPPROPRIATE ADS? We have little control over ads since we belong to ad agencies that serve ads automatically; a standing order should prevent provocative ads, but inappropriate ads do sneak in.
