Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
A John Waters' black comedy about the perfect suburban mom,
who's also a serial killer.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - Several brief but obvious flashes of a pornographic movie
showing nude, abnormally large breasts, and a number of skin magazines with varying
degrees of female nudity. There is one very noisy and rambunctious sex scene between a
married couple (they are shown under covers). There is also a very long masturbation scene
(also under covers).
VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - There are 7 murders, and all include gore. The murder
weapons include scissors, a fireplace poker, a car, an air conditioner, a telephone
receiver, falling stage lights and a leg of lamb. One victim is set on fire. All of these
scenes are played for comic effect, but they are gruesome nonetheless. Also, several
gross-out scenes, involving a squashed fly, disgusting table manners, and phlegm.

PROFANITY 6 - About a dozen F-words, and an assortment of very profane
insults, scatological and anatomical references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Masturbation, drug use, voyeurism.
MESSAGE - Picture-perfect suburbs hide dark secrets.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
