A man and woman (John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale), both of
whom are romantically involved with others, meet in a department store and spend a
glorious few hours together. They part, but are never able to forget each other. Fate
continues to deliver signs that they belong together and they go through several
adventures before they find each other again. Also with Jeremy Piven, John Corbett and
Molly Shannon. [1:25]
SEX/NUDITY 4 - We see a man and woman nude through a window; they are
kissing and swaying (we see his bare back and her bare shoulders and upper chest), she
lies back on a sofa, and then we see him holding her panties (we don't see her at this
point; the scene is brief). We see a woman sleeping and she has bare shoulders. A man and
woman kiss romantically several times, a woman kisses a man on the cheek, a man kisses a
woman on the arm. A man tells a woman he has a crush on her. There are a few sexual
references: a conversation about a couple's sex life, a reference to having one last fling
before getting married, an artist says "she sat on me" rather than "she sat
for me." There are several homosexual references between two women and two men: A man
massages a man's shoulders, a man makes a joke about being a man's first wife, two women
are mistaken as being a couple, and a woman says "goodbye my lesbian lover" to
another woman.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A woman is hit in the head by a golf ball and is smacked
in the head by a golf club. A man grabs another man by the lapels and yells at him. A
music video shows a group of men dressed like Vikings writhing in pain and falling to the
ground (due to the sound of the music). A man dressed in a golf ball and tee costume is
wrapped up in a dog's leash and falls to the ground. A man grabs a man's leg and is
dragged on the ground. A woman trips and falls while ice skating and gets a scratch on her
elbow. Some people argue over a pair of gloves in a store.
PROFANITY 4 - 6 scatological terms, 1 anatomical term, 10 mild obscenities,
8 religious exclamations. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Fate and destiny, love, soulmates, extortion, privacy
laws, New Age theories, mythological explanations.
MESSAGE - Leaving life to chance can leave you lonely and longing. If you
want to improve yourself you must sometimes be content to be thought of as a fool.
(Note: This film takes place in New York; the WTC towers are not visible.)
