ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|

True story about a seven-year-old chess prodigy, who's
unhappy when he's pressured by adults to become a heartless winner.
SEX/NUDITY 0 - None.
VIOLENCE/GORE 1 - Young boys are frightened when they are hiding in the
woods and a man comes up behind them (he means no harm). Several -- civilized -- verbal
confrontations.
PROFANITY 1 - Some very mild name calling. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Gambling, drinking, drugs, homelessness, winning and losing,
disappointment, contempt, jealousy, antagonism, living up to your parents standards.
MESSAGE - Winning isn't everything, being a decent human being and enjoying
the game is more important. Children should be allowed to enjoy childhood without undue
competitive pressures.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
