Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Al Pacino stars as a blind, sullen veteran who's escorted
on a New York trip by a high school student. They bond, and together manage to solve each
other's quandaries.
SEX/NUDITY 2 - No nudity apart from a baby girl shown nude in the bath tub.
There are, however, discussions of sex and one insinuated sex scene with a prostitute:
Pacino is dropped at the entrance of a hotel and told which apartment a woman is in. He
comes back hours later.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - Pacino threatens his escort with a gun, and then threatens
to commit suicide by shooting himself in the head; there's a scuffle between the two men.
There's a high-speed drive through deserted Manhattan streets, and a man and his Jaguar
are doused with paint.
the review continues below...
PROFANITY 8 - Approximately 26 F-words, 6 references to the female and male
anatomy, 6 sexual references, 20 scatological terms. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Blindness and hopelessness, integrity, lying to cover for a
friend, suicide, strained family relations.
MESSAGE - Life is what you make of it. Don't snitch, even when you may be
severely punished for your position.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
