Saw IV | 2007 | R | - 7.10.10

Jigsaw and his apprentice are apparently dead, but the murders continue, with a lot more torture. Meanwhile FBI profilers help the police unravel the grisly puzzles. With Scott Patterson, Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, Costas Mandylor and Justin Louis. Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman. [1:35]

SEX/NUDITY 7 - We see video of a man raping a woman: the woman is strapped to a bed (we hear her screaming and whimpering through a gag), the man (he's clothed) climbs on top of her, makes crude sexual remarks and begins thrusting.
We see a nude dead male body on a table in a morgue being prepped for an autopsy and his genitals, bare legs, chest and abdomen are visible. We see several photos of women who have been restrained and sexually assaulted (please see the Violence/Gore category for more details) and one photo shows a woman's genital area.
A man caresses a dog in an exuberant way that may imply sexuality.
A man is shown bare-chested and wearing boxer shorts. A woman wears a low-cut top that reveals cleavage.
A wife kisses her husband on the cheek.

VIOLENCE/GORE 10 - During an autopsy a cut opens up the male body's scalp (squishing and tearing is heard), the scalp is pulled back over the skull and the skull is then opened with a saw to expose the brain (there's a lot of squishing and we see bloody tissue), the brain is removed and weighed on a scale, and the chest and abdomen are opened next (there's more squishing and blood): the rib cage is spread open and the stomach is removed (with more squishing and blood), the stomach is cut open (goo oozes out) and a piece of wax is found among its contents.
A man is forced at gunpoint to strap himself into restraints on a bed, his head is placed in a vice-like device, and he is given two metal attachments which when pressed drives a wedge into his eyes; we see one wedge pierce his eye (he screams and blood spurts), we then hear clanking and see one of his legs pulled off from the knee (blood sprays on the walls), and it is suggested that his other eye is pierced and his head is crushed (we see him dead later with both legs missing below the knee, both arms missing at the elbow, both eyes gouged out and soaked in blood).
A man wakes up with a chain around his neck and his eyes stitched closed, another man wakes up with a chain around his neck and his mouth stitched closed, and they are both chained to a piece of equipment that begins to shorten their chains; they panic and try to get free, they fight each other, one has a large hook and one has an ax, one is struck in the leg with the hook (we see the hook in his leg and blood), the other is struck in the neck (blood spurts and sprays), they punch each other repeatedly and one man is struck repeatedly in the head until he falls limp, while one man pulls the stitches out of his lips and blood pours from the wounds.
A man with a gun walks into a room where a woman wearing a mask is chained into a chair, her hair is wound into a device that pulls her hair, the woman screams, her scalp begins to pull off her head (blood spurts and we hear tearing and the loud clanking of the device), and she is freed before her scalp is completely separated.
A man and a woman standing back to back are strapped together and long spikes pierce their bodies (blood is shown at each entry and exit point), and the woman is shown pulling out each spike from her body and pulling them out of the man at the same time (blood spurts and sprays, she screams, he yells and we hear some squishing); one spike opens an artery in the man that gushes blood and he dies.
A man is strapped into a chair, when he wriggles he is pierced through the arms (we hear crunching and blood spurts), a frame made of sharp knives is secured around his face and head, he presses his face against the knives, he is cut, we see blood and he screams; he is then dropped out of the chair and is free of the knives, he grabs one knife and lunges toward a man standing near him, but slips on the bloody floor and falls into razor wire where he is slashed as he writhes trying to break free (it is suggested that he dies there).
We hear a loud bang, blood splatters on plastic sheeting and a dead woman falls into a man's arms (we later see a dead woman with her head splattered against a wall from an explosive device, another person dead on a floor in a puddle of blood and a third dead person on a gurney with a bloody neck wound).
A dead woman is found hanging from chains and with her torso removed (we see muscle and bloody tissue exposed); a device hangs near her with pieces of bloody flesh on it and rats crawling on the body.
A woman with a knife attacks a man, they fight, he grabs her by the hair and pulls (her scalp had already been partially separated) and throws her through a glass wall (she lies on the floor with bloody wounds, still alive, but we see her dead later).
A doll explodes shooting shrapnel into the face and head of a woman (we see bloody holes and shards sticking out of her face and head), she collapses and gasps and we hear that she is fighting for her life in the hospital. Two large blocks of ice crash together, with a man's head in between, smashing his head and killing him (he falls to the floor dead).
A gaping throat wound is visible on a dead man and a surgical head wound is also visible. After a car accident we see a man in the wreckage pulling a metal rod out of his side -- with lots of blood and squishing.
We see video of a man raping a woman: the woman is strapped to a bed (we hear her screaming and whimpering through a gag), the man (he's clothed) climbs on top of her, makes crude sexual remarks and begins thrusting. We see several photos of women who have been restrained and sexually assaulted (we see their bloody faces and blood at their wrists and ankles where they have been bound to a bed).
A trigger is tripped and a device shoots a spike that pierces a person through the head (blood sprays and we see the person stunned and still standing while the spike is driven into a wall behind him and holds him up).
A man with a knife threatens a pregnant woman, and he forces a door open which strikes her in the abdomen, she starts bleeding, we see blood on the floor and we hear that the baby did not survive.
A man is shot in the head (we see a bloody bullet hole). Two men are shot (not fatally) and we see their bloody wounds.
A wounded and unconscious man is dragged by the feet into a room (we see blood trickling from his mouth) and the door is closed.
Throughout most of the movie a man with a chain around his neck hangs with his feet on a large block of ice and as the ice melts the chain around his neck gets tighter; another man is strapped to a chair near him and we are told that he is going to be electrocuted when the ice block melts and water floods under his feet.
A man chained around the neck and standing on a block of ice jumps off the block and begins to gag and sputter; another man comes to put him back on the block and the hanging man kicks him.
Two men fight with punches and shoving. A police officer punches a man in the face (we see his bloody nose) when he thinks that he has been molesting young girls.
A man investigating noises he hears in his apartment is attacked by someone (we don't see who) and he wakes up in a bathtub.
A man has a large scar across his face.
It is implied that a woman has suffered abuse at the hands of her husband. We hear that a man has been missing for 6 months. We hear a man has cancer.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
