Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.

1 to 10

MPAA Rating: PG-13

The bond among three longtime, inseparable friends (Jason Biggs, Steve Zahn, Jack Black) loosens when one of them falls in love with a selfish woman (Amanda Peet); the other two make her pay for stealing their pal. Also with R. Lee Ermey, Amanda Detmer and Neil Diamond. [1:30]

SEX/NUDITY 7 - Lots of crude sexual humor and innuendo, including several references to male and female genitalia, masturbation, oral sex and homosexuality. A few instances of passionate kissing (in one scene two men kiss). A woman moves down a man's torso to perform fellatio, then we see the two in bed (they are under the covers but we see the man's bare chest), both complaining of sore mouths and jaws (implying that both performed oral sex). A woman offers to sexually please a man with her hand and then we see her put her hand in his pants. A man drops melted cheese in between a woman's cleavage and wipes it off with his finger, then the woman erotically sucks the cheese off his finger; then the two kiss passionately. A woman takes off her shirt (we see her in her bra) and then she kisses a man as the two recline on a couch; later we see her in her bra with her pants unzipped, exposing the top of her underwear. A boy looks up a girl's skirt and the camera focuses in on a close-up of the crotch of her underwear. A man buries his head in a woman's cleavage. Several times and in different scenes we see parts of a woman's bare breasts (she wears clothes that reveal the inner parts of her breasts, but no bare nipples are visible). In two separate scenes we see a close-up of a man's bare buttocks; in one a man is having posterior implant surgery. We see the side view of a completely naked man (no genitalia are visible) allegedly practicing yoga. A man opens a coffin and talks about how well-endowed the female corpse is. We glimpse what seems to be a topless woman on a magazine cover; also, we see two topless women in a photograph but their nipples are covered by a taped-on dot. We see the top of a man's buttocks when he bends over to push a car. In two separate scenes we see several shots of a woman in her bra. A few scenes of women in their night gowns, and a few scenes with shirtless men. Lots of cleavage.

VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - Mostly played for laughs: A boy carrying a lunch tray is intentionally tripped by another kid. A girl punches a boy in the face and throws him on the table into plates of food. A girl kicks a boy in the face. A man throws another into a water table and a man punches another in the face. A woman flips out of a chair covered in food. Several football tackles. A raccoon jumps on a man's head and he tosses it off and shoots it with a tranquilizer dart; a man accidentally shoots himself in the leg with a dart; a man shoots a woman in the buttocks with a dart. A woman kicks a man and shoves his head in the toilet bowl, dunking him. A man uses an electric zapper and shocks a woman who's holding onto a man with his head in water and he gets zapped as well. A man zaps another man in the crotch with the same device (later we see him nursing his groin with an ice pack). A woman kicks a man in the groin. A man throws a pole like a spear and it hits a man in the chest and kills him. A trapeze artist falls several feet and dies (we only see him slip away and fall and then hear he died). A woman is kidnapped and chained to a couch in a basement. A woman hits a man over the head with a lamp, and a man punches another through a glass door. A woman throws two men off a porch onto a car. A truck bursts through a wall. A man jumps out of a truck and is hit by a speeding vehicle (the man hits the hood and windshield and then flips away). A woman hits a man over the head with a chair. A woman and man punch each other's teeth out. A woman throws a man off a pier into the sea and then dives in to save him. A man falls out of a moving truck. A woman throws two men out a window. A man puts electric clamps on another man's nipples and shocks him several times, causing his shirt to catch fire. We see two men kickboxing and one gets knocked out and apparently dies. A man squats and defecates in a yard. Men put a corpse in a car and allow the car to drive over a cliff and explode. We see several sutures on a man's behind. A man has a cut on his forehead. A woman's water breaks. A boy spits up milk; a man spits up water.

PROFANITY 5 - One F-word derivative, many anatomical references and slang terms, many scatological references, several mild obscenities, a few religious profanities, and a few insults. [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Sex, homosexuality and homosexual marriage, jealousy, psychotherapy, kidnapping, prostitution, high school football coaches, prison and prison sex, choosing your lover over your friends.

MESSAGE All it takes is a little Neil Diamond to brings lovers together for life.

Our Ratings Explained

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.

INAPPROPRIATE ADS? We have little control over ads since we belong to ad agencies that serve ads automatically; a standing order should prevent provocative ads, but inappropriate ads do sneak in.
