ASSIGNED NUMBERS

Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.

1 to 10

MPAA Rating: R

In this comedy, a mob boss forces struggling musicians Sam Rockwell and Steve Zahn to crack safes. Also with Mark Ruffalo, Josh Pais, Paul Giamatti, Michael Lerner, Harvey Fierstein, Christina Kirk and Michael Schmidt. [1:29]

SEX/NUDITY 2 - Sexual innuendo (including a reference to prostitution). A man and woman kiss in one scene. We briefly see two men in their underwear and a woman in a short robe.

VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - Someone is punched in the face and another is elbowed in the stomach. Two people punch each other's arms several times, two people tackle a man and someone pushes two people's heads together and threatens them. To "psych-up," two people shove each other and one slaps the other's forehead. A person is thrown against a wall a few times during what looks like a wrestling match. It's implied that someone knocks out two others with a crowbar; we later see them bound face to face with tape. Several verbal death threats. Off-screen, someone apparently bursts into flames (the scene is filmed as comical rather than violent).

PROFANITY 9 - Nearly 40 F-words, a lot of anatomical references (including one clinical reference), scatological references and insults, and some mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Mistaken identities, robbery, organized crime, bar mitzvahs, low self-esteem, relationship break-ups.

MESSAGE - Thieves can have a tender side.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
