ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

A law-school student and reformed poker addict is drawn
back into the game when the friend he used to hustle with is released from prison.
Starring Matt Damon, Edward Norton, John Malkovich, John Turturro, Gretchen Mol, Famke
Janssen, Martin Landau and Michael Rispoli.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - Sexual innuendo (including references to homosexuality).
Several kisses. We see some topless dancers in thong underwear. In two scenes, some
scantily clad women are sitting around what looks to be a brothel (twice we see a woman
kneeling before a clothed man, presumably ready to perform oral sex). A man moves his hips
in a sexual manner while taunting another man.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A man drags another man out of a bar, then punches him a
few times in the stomach and face (he gets some bloody cuts on his face). Two men are
punched and kicked by a group of men (their faces are very bloody). A man threatens to
kill two men.
PROFANITY 10 - About 135 F-words, many anatomical references, lots of
scatological references, lots of mild obscenities and a couple insults. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Gambling addiction, organized crime, relationships, prison
life, betrayal.
MESSAGE - Pursue the career you're best at, not the career others encourage
you to pursue.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
