A horrible massacre of African-Americans in 1920's Florida
is recounted in this historical drama.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - Kissing, sexual innuendo. A man and woman have sex and we see
his bare buttocks and thrusting. Another couple have sex with the man behind the woman
with thrusting, moaning and we see her face looking excited and sexually satisfied.
VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - A man is shot and hanged while alive -- a bloody sheet
covers his dead body later. Many hanged people are shown with blood on them. A hanged man
(still alive) has his ear cut off. A burned corpse is seen. A man is kicked a few times
and then shot in the head. A man is almost hanged and his body is shown convulsing. Many
people are shot and killed with some blood. A mob kicks a man several times and his mouth
is very bloody. A mob surrounds a home and a few people are shot with some blood. A man
hits a woman and knocks her across the room; he kicks her several times as she lies on the
floor. A woman has many bruises on her back and face. Threatening, slapping, scuffles,
fistfights. Burning property. White mobs chase and surround African-Americans and their
homes. Animals are shot and killed.
PROFANITY 4 - A couple of scatological references, a few anatomical
references, many mild obscenities, many racial slurs. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Racism, mass murder, brutality, mob rule.
MESSAGE - Racism is evil. Your actions may cause unintended consequences.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
