ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage save San Francisco from Ed
Harris, a military man turned terrorist.
SEX/NUDITY 3 - Kissing, sexual innuendo. Cage and his girlfriend have sex
(she's on top of him while they're both clothed, moaning).
VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - Some explosions, people stabbed, people are beaten up,
people are shot and killed (sometimes resulting in spurts of blood gushing out). Bloody
corpses, two men are liquified by toxic gas. A car chase results in lots of property
damage. A few falls from high places, a man is stabbed in the throat (gurgling and lots of
blood), a man has his feet shot with lots of blood and then a heavy object crushes him; we
see his death as he twitches. A man injects himself in the heart, a man is impaled on a
fence post.
PROFANITY 8 - 20+ F-words, many scatological references and mild
obscenities, some anatomical references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Terrorism, the military, chemical weapons.
MESSAGE - Our government isn't always just.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
