Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.
Mel Brooks' comic send-off of Kevin Costner's "Robin
Hood: Prince of Thieves."
SEX/NUDITY 4 - Nudity consists of a woman shown taking a bath (covered by
bubbles). There's some cleavage and we see her in a chastity belt. There are lots and lots
of sexual innuendos and anatomical references: a blind man reads a "Braille
Playboy" while sitting on a toilet; another man's shadow gives the impression that
he's sexually aroused; many references to circumcision and virginity; implied scenes of
sex and, even one of rape.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - People in shackles in a dungeon, and torture by stretching
one's tongue. Some fights with fists, swords and sticks. A blind man keeps running into
things and falling down. Villagers pull off their ears and throw them at Robin Hood.
Everything is done in obvious slapstick.

PROFANITY 3 - Many scatological and anatomical references. Some cussing. [profanity glossary]
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
