Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.

1 to 10

MPAA Rating: R

Liam Neeson is Robert Roy McGregor, a Scottish hero from 1713.

SEX/NUDITY 6 - A woman is raped in a very long and quite brutal scene (see Violence/Gore below). A man walks out of a lake naked but we only see his chest and hips. A man and his wife begin kissing in bed which leads to sex -- we see a little thrusting. A man and woman kiss, and they are clothed but obviously making love. Some fairly graphic and tawdry talk about sex. A woman's dress becomes wet (she's in the lake) and we vaguely and briefly see the outline of her breasts.

VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - There are a few sword fights, one of which results in a fatal bloody wound shown in gory detail. A man is threatened with a sword, grabs it and shows the resulting bloody gash on his hand. Shown in close-up, a man is brutally stabbed and dies, and yet another is stabbed in the neck and then drowned. The carcass of a cow is shown with some skin flayed off, a dog is shot and its bloody body is briefly seen later, livestock are killed and a house is burnt in an extended, violent scene. A woman is punched in the stomach, hit in the face and dragged by the hair. She is then put over a table and raped in a very long and quite brutal scene. A woman hangs herself and we see her dead body. Several men are shot and killed. A man is hit in the face, punched, kicked and dragged by horses. A man cuts open a dead cow and we see entrails and organs pulled out.

PROFANITY 4 - A couple of instances of a slang U.K. term for having intercourse, several scatological terms and coarse 17th-century anatomical terms, and a handful of other milder obscenities. [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Honor, rape, poverty, masters and servants/slaves (the feudal system), the decadent aristocracy.

MESSAGE - If you don't have your honor, you have nothing; honor must come before everything.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.

INAPPROPRIATE ADS? We have little control over ads since we belong to ad agencies that serve ads automatically; a standing order should prevent provocative ads, but inappropriate ads do sneak in.
