ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

A family on vacation is forced by two bank robbers into
taking them down a hazardous river. With Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon.
SEX/NUDITY 2 - A woman is shown disrobing and skinny dipping: we only see
her silhouette. There are two or three romantic kisses. Some cleavage in a tight fitting
wet suit. A man is shown sans shirt a couple of times. There is a somewhat veiled
suggestion to rape.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - There are a lot of edge-of-your-seat scenes of a raft
going through river rapids. Two men are shot, and another is shot at, and he falls from a
cliff into a river. There are a few fist fights resulting in bloody faces. There are also
a couple of scenes where the weapon of choice is a paddle. A man slaps a boy hard across
the face, and a dog is shot at.
PROFANITY 5 - One F-word and an assortment of scatological and anatomical
references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Marital difficulties, an absent dad.
MESSAGE - Families which stay together, can survive together. A boring
father can regain his family's love by saving them from psycho killers.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
