MPAA Rating: R

East and West clash as two American homicide detectives (Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes) investigate a murder that is supposedly being covered up by a Japanese corporation.

SEX/NUDITY 8 - Brief scene of full female frontal nudity and some topless women. One violent, very explicit sex scene where oral sex is implied, and the woman is eventually choked; this scene is shown several times on video. A man eats sushi off a nude woman's stomach while another nude woman watches.

VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - A woman is choked while having sex (see Sex/Nudity above). Two karate fights, and one sword fight (a man's throat is slashed). A man falls to his death in a cement mixer; another man shoots himself, but we only see drops of blood land on a photo. A car explodes burning the driver (nothing is shown).

PROFANITY 7 - About 30 F-words, 10 scatological terms, and several minor profanities. [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Racism, Japan-bashing, loyalty above all else, prostitution.

MESSAGE - Do not fear other cultures, instead learn to understand them. What seems obvious may not be so.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. INAPPROPRIATE ADS? We have little control over ads since we belong to ad agencies that serve ads automatically; a standing order should prevent provocative ads, but inappropriate ads do sneak in.
