ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are two sisters who stir
up a witch's brew in the romantic comedy. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing co-star.
SEX/NUDITY 2 - A couple kiss and begin to undress but go no further. There
are scenes with suggestive dancing, scantily clad women, kissing, and sexual innuendo.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A man sticks his hand into a screaming man's chest and
comes out with a bloody badge. A long needle is stuck into a bird and it's bloody when
withdrawn. A scene of an exorcism with writhing, etc. In two scenes two palms are slashed
with a knife and we see some blood. A man is hit by a truck (we hear it but don't see it).
An attempted hanging (it's not concluded) and a person is nearly strangled. A gun is held
to a person's head and a man is hit on the head with a frying pan. A woman has a black eye
and scratches on her face. Kids throw rocks at other kids. There are a couple of
struggles.
PROFANITY 4 - An anatomical reference, some mild obscenities, and a few
scatological references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Sisters, witchcraft, mysticism, exorcisms, Mr. Right.
MESSAGE - Magic exists.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
