|
|

A promising young attorney (Tom Hanks) is fired by his law
firm when they discover he has AIDS. Denzel Washington plays the attorney who represents
him in his discrimination lawsuit against the firm.
SEX/NUDITY 2 - A locker room scene where men's naked backsides are shown
briefly. A gay man tries to pick up Washington in a drugstore, although nothing explicit
is said or done. There are a few disparaging references to homosexuals, and sex acts are
obliquely referred to. Hanks and his male lover kiss once and they dance together closely.
VIOLENCE/GORE 1 - Washington grabs a man by his shirt and threatens him.
AIDS induced lesions are shown a few times, and Hanks' slow decline is rather graphic.
PROFANITY 1 - A few mild profanities and a few sexual innuendoes. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Homosexuality, discrimination, AIDS.
MESSAGE - Fight for your rights; AIDS is just another disease; alternative
lifestyles should be accepted.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
