Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Six high school seniors are desperate to do well on their S.A.T. exams, realizing that a high score can help them achieve their goals. SEX/NUDITY 5 - A young man imagines kissing a young woman passionately while in the back seat of a car; we see them kissing, fondling each other, we hear moaning, we see her lie down on the seat and he reaches to pull his pants down (we see a hint of his buttocks cleavage). A young man and a young woman kiss in several scenes. A woman sits on her desk, her short skirt falls open revealing her stocking tops and bare thighs, a young man gets down on the floor (pretending to have to pick up papers) and asks, "Is there anything I can do for you while I'm down here?" A young man looks at a young woman's cleavage as she bends over a desk. We see a man and a younger woman in bed sleeping together. Women in bikinis kiss a man wearing swim trunks (he's in a pool). A young woman is hugged between two young men (she and one of the young men look at each other with uneasy interest). A young woman wears a short skirt and we see her panties, and a woman wears a very short top and low-cut skirt revealing cleavage and bare thighs. Women wear outfits that reveal bare abdomens, cleavage, and bare thighs in many other scenes. A young man's T-shirt has images of nude women with bare breasts and buttocks. A man looks at a Victoria's Secret catalog (we see a woman on the cover wearing a bra). A young man comes out of a bathroom stall zipping up his pants. A young woman talks about wanting to be a mother, or do porn. A young man talks to another young man about, "...trying to get in her pants," a young man makes a crude reference to his endowment, a young woman refers to a woman as a "piece," a young man asks a young man, "...as the feeling near your crotch?" and a young man says to a young woman, "you look like you need a pimp."

VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A young woman imagines fighting off many armed guards who shoot at her while she does a "Matrix"-like attack on them, leaving them all unconscious on the floor. A young man imagines being surrounded by many armed guards, and a young man imagines being attacked by a large crow. A young man runs into a door and a wall a couple of times, and a young man falls off a rope ladder and onto the floor. A young man talks about wanting to be a character in a video game (the character eats the faces off his opponents). A man urinates in a jail cell with other men around (we see a trickle going into a toilet). A young woman wears a mask that looks like a headless person with a bloody stump and bones at the neck. There are tense moments when young people are almost caught by security guards.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
