Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Director Clint Eastwood also stars as a Texas sheriff who's
after escaped convict Kevin Costner.
SEX/NUDITY 4 - There is one sex scene which takes place in a diner: we see a
woman in her underwear and later her bare derriere is exposed. She simulates oral sex
using a pickle as her visual aide. She and Kevin Costner start having sex on one of the
restaurant tables, and he's shown licking her backside. A boy interrupts the
"passion" and the scene is over.
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - There is an attempted rape scene. A young boy, who is
being held hostage, is slapped violently several times. A man is shot off-screen, and
there's a close-up of his dead, bloody body. Another dead body is found in the trunk of a
car, and there is a quick close-up shot. A family is held at gunpoint, and a boy shoots a
man in the stomach; we see his bloody wound. The man is then shot in the chest -- it's
bloody and graphic.

PROFANITY 4 - A wide variety of creatively profane terminology, ranging from
the scatological to the anatomical. No F-words. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Child abuse.
MESSAGE - Things aren't always the way they appear to be on the surface.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
