Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
The trials and travails of "Hustler" publisher
Larry Flynt (played by Woody Harrelson) are detailed here.
SEX/NUDITY 8 - Lots and lots of sexual innuendo (including references to
masturbation, lesbianism, bestiality, oral sex, etc) and lots of nudity (topless women and
full frontal female nudity). Also kissing, suggestive dancing and stripping with scantily
clad, often topless women. A sex scene between three women who are eventually joined by a
man in a hot tub. We see bare breasts and bare female and male buttocks, kissing,
caressing, fondling and thrusting. A huge, cartoon penis is shown, a woman poses topless
and spreads her legs for the camera (but she has underwear on).
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A man shoots a rifle at another person. A man pushes a
woman in the face and knocks her down. In a slide show we see many scenes of death and
violence with some blood shown -- dead bodies and Holocaust survivors. A man throws
oranges at another. Two men are shot and there is some blood on their torsos. A man has a
bloody bandage on his shoulder and a bloody IV tube. A drowned woman is seen in a bathtub.
A woman is seen in many scenes with many bruises on her body.
the review continues below...
PROFANITY 8 - About 30 F-words, a couple of profane hand gestures and a man
wears a shirt in court with the F-word on it. Some scatological references, many
anatomical references, some mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
