Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
George Clooney is a bank robber and Jennifer Lopez is the
U.S. marshal who tries to stop him but falls in love with him instead.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - Lots and lots of sexual innuendo and sexual tension. A man
and woman begin to undress (we see them in their underwear) and then kiss passionately
(nothing more is shown). Women wear some cleavage revealing outfits. A man is seen in a
bathtub.
VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - Several people are shot and killed or wounded. Prisoners
are fired upon and it is implied that they are killed. A prisoner is stabbed resulting in
bloody wounds. There is a bloody scene showing two murdered people. A man shoots another
man, a man accidentally shoots himself leaving a bloody head wound, and a woman shoots at
two men. Boxing matches. A woman hits a man with a metal rod and a man knocks a prison
guard unconscious. Some kicking, hitting with objects, face slapping and punching. A woman
slams a man into a wall and then to the floor. A woman is shoved into the trunk of a car.
An attempted rape. A man squishes a bag of goldfish. Threatening with guns.
the review continues below...
PROFANITY 10 - Over 50 F-words, more than 40 scatological terms, about 24
anatomical terms, about 15 mild obscenities, a racial slur and sundry insults. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Robbery, prison life, duty vs. personal feelings, law
enforcement.
MESSAGE - Lust can be stronger than duty. Even criminals can be basically
decent people.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
