Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Kevin Costner directs and stars in
this Western about four freegrazers -- cattlemen who wander the
countryside without owning a piece of land. The freegrazers
(Costner, Robert Duvall, Diego Luna and Abraham Benrubi) run into a
ruthless, ambitious rancher (Michael Gambon) who's violently opposed
to sharing his land with anyone. The four men must decide whether to
stay and fight for their way of life or to leave and forfeit their
cattle. Also with Annette Bening and Dean McDermott. [2:14]
SEX/NUDITY 2 - A man and a woman kiss a few times, and
a man and a woman express their romantic interest in each other. A
man talks about hiring dancing girls for his saloon, and a man talks
about a man taking "payment" from his mother "any way he could." A
woman undresses (we see her in her period undergarments) and a man
sees her through a slightly open door. A woman's shirt hangs open
and reveals a bit of cleavage. A man and a young man are shown
bare-chested while being examined by a doctor.
VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - Four men approach two other men and
they face off in the street: One man is shot in the head (we see a
bloody hole), another man is shot in the stomach (he is lifted off
the ground), another man is shot in the shoulder (blood spurts),
another man is shot repeatedly and slumps to the ground, and more
gunfire is exchanged back and forth. A man is shot repeatedly and
sits against a wall gasping and asking for the man to finish him
off. A man is shot in the foot and then in the back and we see blood
spurt out of his chest, a man standing outside is shot through a
wall and is thrown through the air (he twitches as he lies on the
ground dying). A man opens a door and is shot in the stomach and
another man is shot as he runs away. A man holds a woman around the
throat with a gun to her head, a group of people hold him at
gunpoint and another man approaches and shoots him repeatedly (the
woman is splattered with blood). Men shoot back and forth, many are
hit and killed, some are hit and wounded (we see some blood on
wounds). A man is chased by many men shooting at him, until he is
hit and falls to the ground dead. We see a dead man after having
been shot in the head (we see a bloody hole) and a dead dog with a
bloody wound on his side. A young man lies unconscious on the ground
with a bloody head and stomach wound. Two men hold four other men at
gunpoint, one is hit in the face with a gun, another hit in the
stomach with a gun, another hit in the face with a gun, and they are
forced to remove their pants and lie on the ground. A man holds a
man at gunpoint, chains him into a jail cell, hits him in the face
with a gun and puts him to sleep with chloroform (several other men
are handled in the same way). We hear about a fight that has left
one man with a broken rib and a bloody gash on his head and another
man with a broken arm (we see the wounds after the fact). A man
holds a little girl at gunpoint. A man is startled out of sleep,
panics and holds a gun on a woman thinking she is someone else. A
man talks about having killed many men in his life, a man talks
about shooting a man in the throat, and killing many men in a war. A
man talks about his wife and child dying from a disease. A man talks
about "digging" a bullet out of a man's wound. We see a man lying
unconscious in a doctor's office, several times. A man flinches in
pain when a doctor touches his side. A man is hit in the face by a
beer mug, and a man shoots out a sign in a crowded saloon. A woman
slaps a man in the face. Two men prepare for a showdown, loading
weapons and laying out a plan while townspeople leave for higher
ground. A man kicks a young man off his horse and he lands in a
creek. A man digs a grave, buries a man and we see him carrying the
body of a dead dog. A dog struggles and is swept into the current of
a flood (a man saves him). Horses and a dog are frightened by
thunder during a loud storm. A man smacks another man on the leg
with a stick to wake him up. A young man picks at his feet, and a
man spits frequently. We see a man on his knees and, although not
clear, he could be vomiting.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
