Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Set in the 1920s, four brothers make a plan to rob a lot of
banks. Matthew McConaughey, Ethan Hawke, Skeet Ulrich and Vincent D'Onofrio.
SEX/NUDITY 3 - A few passionate kisses; Willis (Matthew McConaughey) takes a
bath but nothing is seen; Louise (Julianna Margulies) is pulled into the tub fully
clothed; one very brief (momentary) skinny-dipping shot; scantily-clad dancing girls in
club. Sexual innuendo.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - There are several shootings, but not terribly graphic.
Usually blood isn't seen except for one instance in which a character is shown with
several bullet wounds and blood gurgling from his mouth. This is a long, lingering shot. A
horse is shot. In a hospital, a lawman puts his fingers into a character's gunshot wound
to induce pain. A few brawls, and a few painful-looking instances of characters getting
his with gun butts and rifle butts. Some scenes of men struggling, with hitting and
kicking. There are several explosions.

PROFANITY 3 - About 10 scatological references, several anatomical terms,
many mild obscenities and insults. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Crime and corruption, twisted ethical codes.
MESSAGE - Family solidarity is a powerful force to be reckoned with.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
