Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
A dysfunctional family confronts personal demons and finds
some understanding when they spend Thanksgiving together for the first time in three
years. With Blythe Danner, Roy Scheider, Julianne Moore, Noah Wyle, Hope Davis, Michael
Vartan, James LeGros, Brian Kerwin, Laurel Holloman and Arija Bareikis. [1:30]
SEX/NUDITY 6 - Some sexual innuendo and several kisses, some passionate.
There are three sex scenes with lots of thrusting and moaning but no nudity (in two of the
scenes, both people are fully clothed; in the other, both are covered with sheets and we
see their bare shoulders). We hear a man and woman moaning and a headboard being
"thumped" rhythmically. A clothed man and woman lying in bed turn toward each
other as the scene ends and it's implied they're going to have intercourse. A woman in a
slip rolls on top of a clothed man and kisses him while they're in bed; a man passionately
kisses a woman while lying on top of her. We see a man and woman holding each other in
bed. A woman begins to unbutton her shirt in front of a man, but the scene ends before we
see any nudity. We see a shirtless man wrapped in a blanket.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A man is shoved onto a table and he falls to the ground
when the table breaks underneath him. A man intentionally slams a woman's hand between his
knee and a table; we hear a thud and the woman yelps, but she's not injured. A man grabs a
woman and forces her to kiss him briefly before she breaks away (we see this scene twice).

PROFANITY 5 - About 10 F-words, an anatomical reference, several
scatological references, several mild obscenities and a couple of insults. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Dysfunctional families, bitterness, mental illness, love
relationships.
MESSAGE - It's hard but not impossible to develop loving relationships with
others when you're part of a dysfunctional family.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
