Matt Dillon plays a blue-collar New Yorker who realizes
he's still in love with his ex-wife (Annabella Sciorra). Mary-Louise Parker and William
Hurt co-star.
SEX/NUDITY 4 - There are several sex scenes, but the actual sex takes place
off screen. In one scene, Dillon comprehensively gropes Mary-Louise Parker's body, over
her clothes. Parker takes off her skirt and there's a close-up shot of her derriere in
skimpy underwear.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A man is electrocuted, and Dillon suffers minor burns.
Both are in the hospital for several days and one is hooked up to life support.
PROFANITY 5 - The F-word is used once, and there's an assortment of
scatological and anatomical terms. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Divorce, adultery, working class vs. middle class culture,
ethnic remarks.
MESSAGE - You can't love someone just because it seems like the right thing
to do, you have to follow your heart.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
