ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|

Richard Gere stars as a man who suffers from a manic
depression, and Lena Olin steps in as the psychiatrist who treats him.
SEX/NUDITY 4 - Sex is implied, off the screen, on two different occasions.
Gere is shown nude in the shower but his private parts are not exposed. There is also a
brief shot of a woman in a bathtub, nude from the waist up.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A woman commits suicide and we see a brief shot of her
bloody body in a bathtub; we do not see her kill herself, only the result. There is also a
scene where another woman is being strangled.
PROFANITY 7 - A couple of dozen F-words, as well as a few scatological terms
and profane insults. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Mental illness, especially manic depression.
MESSAGE - Doctors can't fix people's lives. Cure to mental illness has to
come from inner strength.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
