ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Robert Townsend directs and stars as a meek high school
teacher who's struck by a meteor and thereby endowed with the usual super powers: super
strength, speed, invincibility, X-ray vision and flight.
SEX/NUDITY 1 - Just some people in their underwear, some flirting and
leering.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - Lots of shooting, punching and kicking. It's done in a
quasi-cartoonish sort of way, but some people -- and a dog -- do get hurt. There are
references to drugs and a scene inside a drug "factory."
PROFANITY 2 - Some anatomical references and mild cussing. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Drugs, the police vs. gangs, inner-city violence.
MESSAGE - You must stand up for what's right, neighbors have to get together
to stop violence and crime.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
