ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and James Garner star in this
rough-and-tumble Western comedy based on Garner's "Maverick" TV series from the
'60s.
SEX/NUDITY 2 - Gibson is shown shirtless a few times and Garner and Gibson
are shown naked from the waist up in a bathtub. Foster and Gibson kiss passionately a few
times and their bare shoulders are seen during a scene where they are obviously having
sex.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A great deal of almost cartoonish violence, including lots
of gunfights, threats with guns and fistfights. A man is shown on a horse with a noose
around his neck. A bank is blown up. A man beats up four men by punching them and hitting
them with a frying pan, and he chokes one. A dead man is shown, but the scene is used to
comedic effect. A man is dragged under a runaway stagecoach, and hangs off a cliff. The
blood consists of bloody noses and mouths, after brawls.
PROFANITY 3 - About three scatological terms, a few mild profanities, and a
few sexual innuendoes. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Lawlessness, gambling, gunfighting, stealing.
MESSAGE - If you believe enough in yourself, anything can happen.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
